The most reliable keto fast food order is a plain protein, a low-carb vegetable base and one measured sauce, with the bread, tortilla, breading, rice, beans, fries and sweet drinks removed. The part people skip is counting the whole order. The chicken might be close to zero carbs, but the dip, the extra cheese and the second sauce packet are where calories and a few carbs quietly pile up.
This guide shows how to build a complete order, how to size portions and how to account for sauces, using published nutrition from three chains. To total your own order, use our keto fast food calculator.
The four-part order formula
Every keto fast food order can be checked with the same four questions:
- Protein: Is it grilled, roasted or plain? Breaded and battered items carry most of their carbs in the coating.
- Base: Is there a bun, tortilla, rice or bed of fries under it? Swap it for lettuce, greens or a bowl.
- Add-ons: Cheese, sour cream, guacamole and vegetables each have their own line in the nutrition guide. Add them up.
- Sauce and drink: Count every packet or cup. Choose water, unsweetened tea or a zero-sugar soda.
If an item fails one of the four, fix that part or pick a different item.
Worked examples with published numbers
These totals add up the chain’s published values for each component. Net carbs are total carbs minus fiber.
| Complete order | Calories | Total carbs | Fiber | Net carbs | Protein |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chipotle bowl: chicken, supergreens, cheese, sour cream | 415 | 6g | 2g | 4g | 41g |
| Chipotle bowl: double chicken, supergreens, cheese, sour cream | 595 | 6g | 2g | 4g | 73g |
| Chick-fil-A 12 ct grilled nuggets + 1 Zesty Buffalo sauce | 225 | 3g | 0g | 3g | 38g |
| Chick-fil-A 12 ct grilled nuggets + 1 Garden Herb Ranch sauce | 300 | 3g | 0g | 3g | 38g |
| Wingstop 10 classic Original Hot wings + 5 celery sticks + 1 ranch dip | 1,230 | 3.5g | 1g | 2.5g | 102g |

Notice the Wingstop line. The carbs are low, but the calories are more than double the Chipotle single-chicken bowl, and a full cup of ranch accounts for 320 of them. That is the kind of detail a complete count catches.

Ordering steps at a build-your-own counter
At Chipotle and similar counters, say what you want to leave out before the line starts:
- Ask for a salad or bowl, and say no tortilla, no rice, no beans and no chips.
- Pick chicken, steak, barbacoa or carnitas. Per Chipotle’s guide, a 4 oz portion of chicken lists 0g carbs and 32g protein, while barbacoa lists 2g carbs and 1g fiber.
- Use supergreens as the base (3 oz: 3g carbs, 2g fiber).
- Add cheese and sour cream if they fit your calories. Skip the vinaigrette, or check its line in the guide before adding it.
- Treat fajita vegetables (2 oz: 5g carbs, 1g fiber) and fresh tomato salsa (4 oz: 4g carbs, 1g fiber) as optional extras you count.
Sauce accounting: packets, cups and dressings
Sauce is the line item most people guess at. The serving size matters as much as the sauce itself.
| Sauce (chain) | Serving | Calories | Carbs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zesty Buffalo sauce (Chick-fil-A) | 21g packet | 25 | 1g |
| Garden Herb Ranch sauce (Chick-fil-A) | 21g packet | 100 | 1g |
| Garden Herb Ranch dressing (Chick-fil-A) | 57g serving | 280 | 2g |
| Ranch dip (Wingstop) | 3.25 oz cup | 320 | 2g |
| Blue cheese dip (Wingstop) | 3.25 oz cup | 330 | 4g |
| Sour cream (Chipotle) | 2 oz | 110 | 2g |
The Chick-fil-A ranch sauce packet and ranch dressing are different products with different serving sizes. Read the exact name before you log it.
Practical rules for sauces:
- Count each packet separately. Three packets of a 1g sauce are 3g, not “basically zero.”
- If you use half a dip cup, log half, and be honest about the half.
- Ask for sauce on the side so you control the amount.
- Sweet sauces such as honey mustard, barbecue and teriyaki-style glazes usually carry far more sugar. Check the guide before ordering them.
Portion sizing without guesswork
Published values describe a standard portion. Real scoops vary, so:
- Order doubles deliberately. A double protein gives a known number to log, rather than an unknown “heavy scoop.”
- Count pieces. Nuggets and wings are listed per count or per piece, which makes them easier to track than scooped items.
- Leave a buffer. If your daily target is tight, keep a few grams of carbs unassigned for variation.
When the numbers are missing
Some chains publish less detail, or a location runs a regional item. In that case choose the simplest version of the item, skip unknown sauces and log a conservative estimate. Our net carbs calculator helps when you have total carbs and fiber but no net figure.
